Iga Swiatek has finally done it—she reached her first Wimbledon semifinal after a solid win on grass. On Wednesday, the 23-year-old Polish player beat Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. The match took place on No. 1 Court and lasted 1 hour and 49 minutes.
Swiatek, the No. 8 seed, has won five Grand Slam titles before. She played with confidence and power against Samsonova, who was in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. This was Swiatek’s fifth win in a row over Samsonova. Now, she leads their head-to-head record 5-0.
With this win, Swiatek joins a special group. She is now one of only four active players to reach the semifinals at all four Grand Slam tournaments. The other three are Aryna Sabalenka, Victoria Azarenka, and Karolina Pliskova.
This year has been Swiatek’s best on grass. Before Wimbledon, her best result here was the quarterfinals in 2023. Earlier this summer, she made her first grass-court final in Bad Homburg but lost to Jessica Pegula. So far, she has won eight of her nine matches on grass in 2025.
Swiatek started strong, saving a break point in the first game. She dominated the first set, winning all her first-serve points and breaking Samsonova twice to take it 6-2.
In the second set, Swiatek led 6-2, 4-2, 40-0 and seemed close to an easy win. But Samsonova fought back, leveling the set at 5-5. Swiatek stayed calm. She held her serve from 0-30 down, then broke Samsonova in the next game to win the match. She finished with a powerful forehand winner, showing how much better she has become on grass.
Swiatek is now the first Polish woman to reach the Wimbledon semifinals since Agnieszka Radwanska in 2015.
In other matches, World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka beat Germany’s Laura Siegemund to reach the semifinals. American Amanda Anisimova also advanced by defeating Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 7-6(9).
