On July 3, 2025, the Portuguese Football Federation (PFF) shared sad news: Liverpool and Portugal soccer star Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Silva, a player for Portugal’s Penafiel club, died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain. The PFF said, “We’re heartbroken over Diogo Jota and André Silva’s deaths in Spain this morning.”
This is so sad! Diogo was such a great player. My heart hurts for their family and friends.
What Happened
Spain’s police told BBC Sport the crash happened around 12:30 AM on Thursday. Diogo and André were in a Lamborghini on the A-52 motorway in Cernadilla, Zamora. A tire burst while they tried to pass another car, and the car went off the road and caught fire. Both brothers passed away.
A tire bursting and causing a fire? That’s awful. It’s so hard to believe they’re gone.
A Loved Star
The PFF called Diogo an amazing player with almost 50 games for Portugal’s team. They said he was a “wonderful person” with a big smile everyone loved. They also mourned André, saying both were “champions.” The PFF asked for a minute’s silence before Portugal’s Women’s Euro 2025 game against Spain to honor them.
Diogo’s smile was so special. It’s nice they’re doing a silence to remember him and André.
Liverpool and Fans Are Sad
Liverpool Football Club said they’re “devastated” by Diogo’s death and will support his family and friends. Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool hero, wrote on X, “So sad about Diogo Jota and his brother André. Thinking of their family, wife Rute, and their three kids.”
It’s tough to think how their family feels. Liverpool fans must be so sad, but it’s great to see so much love for them.
Diogo’s Life
Diogo married Rute Cardoso on June 22, 2025, just weeks ago. They had three young kids. He joined Liverpool in 2020, scoring 65 goals in 182 games and winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups. For Portugal, he played 49 games, scored 14 goals, and won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Just married with kids and such a big career? This is so heartbreaking. Diogo did so much in soccer.
Remembering Them
The PFF promised to honor Diogo and André every day. Stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, who said, “This doesn’t make sense,” and clubs like Manchester United are sharing tributes. Liverpool’s town hall lowered its flag, and fans are leaving flowers at Anfield. UEFA will hold a minute’s silence at Women’s Euro games on Thursday and Friday.
All these tributes show how much Diogo and André meant to everyone. It’s so touching. What do you think about this sad news? Tell me.
