Wiaan Mulder played the best cricket of his life against Zimbabwe. The South African batsman scored a massive 367 runs without getting out. This broke South Africa’s previous record for most runs in a Test match. His amazing batting helped South Africa reach 626 runs before they decided to stop.
Mulder showed he cares more about his team than personal glory. He could have tried to break the world record of 400 runs, but chose to stop batting instead. This gave his bowlers more time to attack Zimbabwe. During his innings, Mulder hit 49 fours and 4 huge sixes. One six went so far it flew out of the cricket stadium!
South Africa started the day already at 465 runs. Mulder batted with Dewald Brevis, who scored 72 runs. Later, Kyle Verreynne helped add 113 more runs. Mulder’s father traveled to watch his son play after he became team captain for this match.
When South Africa finished batting, their bowlers destroyed Zimbabwe’s batting. Zimbabwe only scored 170 runs before getting all out. New player Prenelan Subrayen took 4 wickets for 42 runs. Fast bowlers Codi Yusuf and Corbin Bosch also bowled very well. Only Sean Williams fought hard for Zimbabwe with 43 runs.
Because Zimbabwe scored so few runs, they had to bat again immediately. By day’s end, they scored 51 runs but lost 1 wicket. They still need 405 more runs just to make South Africa bat again. Bosch took one wicket before darkness stopped play.
South Africa is in complete control and will likely win soon. Mulder’s huge score and strong bowling have put them far ahead. Zimbabwe must play much better to avoid a heavy defeat.
