On July 24, 2025, Tamil Nadu’s electricity demand fell a lot because of cooler, cloudy weather. On Tuesday, the peak power use was 17,001 megawatts (MW), down from 18,853 MW the same day last week. Daily energy use also dropped to 370 million units (MUs) from 415 MUs. Last year, hot weather made power use skyrocket, but this summer’s rain in places like Chennai has cooled things down.
Power use dropped so much? That’s craz* because of the rain!
Why Less Power?
Chennai’s temperature on Tuesday was only 31°C, 4.5°C cooler than usual. The weather office says light to moderate rain and thunderstorms will keep skies cloudy on Wednesday. A Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) official said people are using fewer air conditioners because it’s cooler. Also, farmers need less power for irrigation pumps since the rain is watering crops.
No ACs and fewer pumps? Rain’s really changing things!
Temporary Change
The TNPDCL official said this lower power use won’t last. “When the rain stops and it gets hot again, people will use more electricity,” they explained. M. Manikandan, who sells ACs and coolers, said sales are down because of the chilly weather. “People aren’t buying cooling stuff right now. It’s too pleasant,” he said. But he thinks sales will go up when it gets hot again.
Cool weather slowing sales? Bet it’ll heat up soon!
What’s Happening
The cooler weather has given Tamil Nadu a break from high power use. Earlier in July, when it hit nearly 40°C, daily use was over 400 MUs. The rain has eased pressure on the state’s power system.
