On July 31, 2025, the Union Cabinet, led by PM Narendra Modi, approved Rs 6,520 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana (PMKSY) from 2021-22 to 2025-26. This includes Rs 1,920 crore extra, with Rs 1,000 crore for 50 food irradiation units and 100 food testing labs, and Rs 920 crore for other projects. The plan aims to keep food fresh and safe across India.
Wow, Rs 6,520 crore for food safety? That’s a huge step!
What’s in the Plan?
The money will fund:
-
50 Food Irradiation Units: These will help preserve 20-30 lakh metric tonnes of food each year, keeping fruits, veggies, and grains fresh longer.
-
100 Food Testing Labs: These labs, run by private companies with NABL approval, will check food to make sure it’s safe to eat.
Both parts are “demand-driven,” meaning companies can apply through open calls (EOIs). The best proposals will get approved based on clear rules.
Keeping food fresh and safe? That’s super helpful for everyone!
How It Works
The irradiation units will use technology to extend food shelf life, reducing waste. The testing labs will check for harmful stuff in food, ensuring it meets safety standards. The government will invite private companies to set up these units and labs across India. This builds on PMKSY’s goal to improve food processing and quality, like keeping mangoes fresh or ensuring packaged snacks are safe.
Testing food and stopping waste? That sounds like a win!
