On August 11, 2025, a report from IDC said India’s smartphone market grew just 0.9% from last year, with 70 million phones shipped from January to June. In April–June (Q2), 37 million phones were shipped, up 7.3% from last year, after two slow quarters. But higher phone prices, now averaging $275 (up 10.8%), and less buying by people could slow things down.
70 million phones? That’s a lot, but growth is tiny!
Apple Shines with iPhone 16
Apple sold 5.9 million phones, up 21.5% from last year. The iPhone 16 was India’s top phone, making up 4% of all shipments. Fancy phones costing $600–$800 grew the most, by 96.4%, with iPhone 16 and 15 taking 60% of that group. Super expensive phones ($800+) grew 15.8%, with Samsung slightly ahead of Apple (49% vs. 48%) thanks to Galaxy S25 and S24 Ultra.

Cheap and Mid-Range Phones
Cheap phones under $100 grew 22.9%, taking 16% of the market, up from 14%. Xiaomi led with its Redmi A4 and A5. Mid-range phones ($100–$200) grew only 1.1%, dropping to 42% of the market. Vivo, OPPO, and realme own 60% of this group. Aditya Rampal from IDC said, “New phones, discounts on old ones, and store ads helped growth in April–June.”

Who’s Winning
Vivo stayed number one for six quarters with 19% of the market, up 23.5%. Samsung (14.5%, up 21%) and OPPO (13.4%, up 25.4%) followed. Motorola and iQOO grew fast, but realme, Xiaomi, and OnePlus saw fewer sales. Stores sold more phones (53.6%) than online (46.4%). IDC thinks 2025 might see a small drop because of high prices.
Vivo’s on top again? They’re the smartphone champs!
